Dr. Rowan Kane

(real name: Mary Rose O'Malley)

BASICS

Virtue: Charity

Vice: Pride

Seeming: Ogre

Kith: Gristlegrinder

Court: Spring

Concept: Black Market Veterinarian/Drug Dealer

APPEARANCE

Of indeterminate gender based on outward appearances, Rowan has messy short dark hair, pale blue eyes, and pale skin. On the rare occasions that their shoulders are visible, those are dotted with an inordinate number of freckles. In their fae mien, the freckles look a lot more like blood splatters, and they extend all over Rowan's body. (You know that joke about every freckle on a ginger is a soul they stole? Not saying it translates to blood spots on a Gristlegrinder representing people murdered, but I don't recommend trying to count Rowan's blood spots.)

BACKSTORY

Rowan was born in 1969. They were the fifth child of an eventual nine children born to conservative Irish Catholic parents, in the suburbs of New York City. While they were born a girl, they didn't understand the necessity of limiting themself in that way. But it was just another thing that kept Rowan in trouble with their parents.

In 1985, they got into the club kid scene, near the beginning of the movement. This was basically exactly the home they'd been looking for without knowing it--a place where gender and morality didn't matter. They ran away from home and lived in a series of squats with other club kids, while spending most nights out partying. That's where Rowan met Solomon, and he managed to keep them MOSTLY out of trouble for a while. Solomon left for college in 1987, but Rowan stayed in the scene for two more years.

Rowan was so far down a k-hole when they were taken that they don't even know what happened. What they do know is that when they came to, they were expected to kill, torture, and maim whoever was brought into their workshop. Most days, they got victims, but no food ... that is, until they realized that victims could be food. After all, their Master sent them these creatures and didn't expect them to come back whole.

Rowan thought for a very long time that this would be their life for eternity. But then the rumors started about how the Queen had broken free of the Master's imprisonment by making a pledge with a pomegranate. And while some of the other changelings tried the same thing, it didn't work. Of course it didn't work. The Master was already on to them. And doing the same thing twice doesn't always work in Arcadia. But it did help Rowan come up with a plan. They swore an oath to eat nothing for ten days. They were so hungry. But every day that they fasted, they saw a little glimmer of light where before there had been none, until finally, on the tenth day, there was a crack in the wall large enough for them to go through and escape the Master.

When they came out, they were in Seattle, and it was 2014. They'd been gone 25 years. But they caught on quickly, and managed to use skills from their mortal days as well as their days in Arcadia to find a niche to fill in this changed world. With a front of a pay-what-you-can veterinarian, they were able to get access to ketamine. And with ketamine, they could start selling Special K to a whole new generation of anyone else who needs to escape for just a little while.

These days, Rowan doesn't touch the K except to deal it. They also are an ethical vegan--mostly vegan, but they won't turn down something that someone else has prepared just because it doesn't fit their strict dietary restrictions. They also won't preach about veganism to anyone. And they HATE people who don't believe in feeding their pets an omnivorous or carnivorous diet as needed. But they also know that humans are meat, and once you get the taste for meat, it's hard to give it up. The temptation is always still there.
